Looking back on 2013 and forward to 2014

Happy New Year everyone!

I thought I’d take this opportunity to look back at some of the things that have happened at Long White Cloud Kung Fu in the past year.  There have been a lot of significant achievements and milestones in 2013

  • Gradings
  • First Weapons Tournament
  • Power Rangers
  • Trip to China
  • Tournament – New Events
  • Online Qigong Courses

It has been great to see so many students progress in their training this year.  In particular it has been great to have three new Black Belts.  Congratulations Lewis, Scott and Abrie

First Weapons Tournament

We held our first ever weapons tournament in 2013.  It went really smoothly and was a lot of fun for all involved.  You can check out some highlights below:

Power Rangers

Long White Cloud Kung Fu students had the great opportunity to appear on Power Rangers not once, but twice.  Once as kung fu students and another time as actual Power Rangers – COOL!  Unfortunately I can’t put any photos of this up yet as the episodes haven’t screened yet, but sometime next year I will.

Trip to China

Several of the senior kung fu students went on a trip to China in the middle of the year. We visited many historic sites including the Great Wall, Temple of  Heaven, Forbidden City and Terracotta Warriors.  We also visited two of the famous kung fu mountains in China, Songshan (home of the Shaolin temple) and Hwashan.  We even visited the training centre for the Shaanxi Wushu team in Xian.

The trip was a great experience and opportunity to understand and appreciate the roots of the Chinese culture that kung fu came from.  You can see some highlights here:

Tournament – New Events

We held another successful tournament in 2013, and we had some new events in this one – Sumo and Forms.  These were a great addition to the sparring events.  You can see highlights here:

Online Qigong Courses

Three new online Qigong courses went live in 2013.  For those who don’t know, qigong teaches us to be aware of, develop, and use the energy in our bodies.  It is great for developing health and resilience and very important for developing advanced kung fu skills.  You can check the qigong courses out here.

And in 2014…

Its been a big year, and I would like to thank all the students who continue to work hard at their kung fu training and also everyone else who has been involved in different ways. Looking forward to 2014 we have even more exciting new developments planned.

  • Performance Development
  • Black Belt Specializations
  • Another Trip To China
  • New Tournament Events
  • New Class Locations
  • More New Qigong Courses

Performance Development

Performance is such a fun part of the martial arts.  In 2014 we have our first ‘Action Star’ workshops being held during the school holidays in January.  These workshops will help students develop skills for performing fight scenes and other action in movies.  You can see details of these workshops here.  We may hold further workshops later in the year as well.

Also, following on from the appearances on Power Rangers, we will pursue other opportunities for gaining performance experience as they arise.

Black Belt Specializations

Sometimes people think of black belt as the end of your kung fu training, but really it is just the beginning.  At Long White Cloud Kung Fu after you have graded to black belt you move on to developing advanced kung fu skills in the area of your choice.  To help with this, beginning in February we will be introducing special black belt sessions on Saturday mornings once a month to work on these specializations.  You can look forward to some exciting displays of skill as the black belts progress in their training.  You can see the new timetable here.

Another Trip To China

In 2014 we will be making another trip to China, this time we will be going through Southern China and visiting another of the famous kung fu mountains Emeishan.  Please let me know if you are interested in joining us on this trip as we will be making plans in January.

New Tournament Events

We look forward to some more great tournaments this year.  At our weapons tournament we want to add a new event this time – Knife Fighting (don’t worry, not with real knives). This is an extremely fast paced and precision based event which should be a lot of fun.  We will be working on preparing competitors for this event early in the new year.

Competition is such a fun part of kung fu that I have come up with a plan for a weekly fighting competition called FIGHT LEAGUE!  I will be working hard to get this started in the new year.  Competitors from all martial arts backgrounds will be invited to participate so you can test your skills against a variety of opponents.  This is going to be EXCITING! You can read a little about it on the FIGHT LEAGUE website here.  Tell your friends about this and see if they are interested too.

New Class Locations

We are planning on starting adults classes in the Remuera/Epson/Newmarket area in 2014.  It will be great to be able to offer classes to people on the other side of the city and expand our pool of students.  We are also looking at a new Teen’s kung fu class in Northcross this year.  More details on these later in January.

More New Qigong Courses

In addition to all of the other things going on at Long White Cloud Kung Fu this year, there are also more online Qigong courses planned to go live in 2014.  This will help students to extend and deepen their understanding of qigong.

There is so much to look forward to in 2014!!! We look forward to sharing it with you.  Enjoy the rest of the break and remember that adult classes recommence on Monday 6th of January.
